Very strong dressage collection

The selection committee has managed to secure a beautiful collection of dressage foals for the auction on September 12. An impressive list of offspring from both young progenitors and proven top stallions from dam lines with the best genes in Europe.

The power of performance is also the motto for the dressage selectors. Bert Poppelaars: “This year we had a choice of many good foals. We had to disappoint quite a lot of people with good quality foals. As a committee you try to find the real gems and that has been very successful this year.”

This year the dam lines are again bursting with Grand Prix horses and approved stallions. The Prinsjesdag photo-video days will take place on 16 and 17 July. We expect to be able to show both collections on the site at the end of July.

Foal Auction Prinsjesdag uses young scouts to put together collections

With the bar at the top, it is a challenge every year to put together high-quality dressage and jumping collections. As of this year, Foal Auction Prinsjesdag will therefore not only deploy professional selection committees, but also young breeding interests to play an active role in this as scouts. In this way the first top foals have already been registered.

Rejuvenation is one of the reasons for the organization to use scouts. “Young people have the future” says Prinsjesdag board member Peter Bleeker with a laugh. “We are all getting older and want to involve young people in the organisation. This is a great way for them to grow with the auction.” The scouts keep a close eye on their network. “Information goes through the internet at lightning speed, our scouts have an enormous network on social media and will use it to discover the best foals.”

stake out lines

From this year on, some familiar and new faces will be collaborating to put together the foal collections of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. One of them is scout Koos Poppelaars, who has been very actively involved in the auction for several years. “Partly because of my father Bert, who is part of the selection committee for dressage foals, I am closely involved in Foal Auction Prinsjesdag and the selection. As a scout I mainly keep an eye on social media and I approach breeders from my own network when they have an interesting dressage foal. It is a matter of drawing many lines, having a clear idea of what kind of foals are good enough for our auction and being lucky enough that breeders want to auction their best foals at Prinsjesdag”, says Koos.

High gun factor

The success of an auction stands or falls with the foals offered. “The results and reputation of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag ensure that most breeders are happy to have their foals auctioned here. We all strive to put together an even stronger collection of foals every year, and in that regard we have made a convincing start this year. The first foals have been definitively registered, including three that I tipped. The auction topper could already be among them, because the level is very high. It is a win-win situation for everyone when the best foals come under our hammer and I am happy to be a part of that.”

Pedigree and presentation

Also Fred Jr. van Straaten, Wouter Bon, Peter and Jasper van der Waaij, and Steffi Verhagen are involved as scouts in Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. The latter sees many foals every day and views them through the eyes of a Prinsjesdag selection committee member. “Through a discussion with the selection committees, we as scouts are well informed about what kind of foals meet the requirements for Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. The selection committee has set the bar high, and so do I.”

On the website From now on, the foals can be registered online for one of the selection days for Foal Auction Prinsjesdag, the first of which is scheduled for Saturday 5 May. The selection criteria for Prinsjesdag foals are strict. The selection committee pays attention to correctness, quality, long lines and flexibility. In addition, the foal must have sport in terms of pedigree and must be commercially attractive. In the case of jumping foals in particular, the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother must have performed well in the sport themselves or have offspring that perform remarkably in the sport.

First selection day on Saturday 5 May

In the months of May, June and July, Foal Auction Prinsjesdag organizes eleven selection days on which the selection committees visit various addresses in the country to select the best foals for the 26e edition of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. Foals with the best bloodlines and great potential for dressage or show jumping. Foals that can make a difference now and in the future.

Selection committee speaking

As the selection committee, Bert Poppelaars and Fred van Straaten Sr. are clear about the Prinsjesdag selection criteria. Bert: “When selecting our foals, we pay attention to correctness, quality, long lines and suppleness. In addition, the foal must have sport in terms of pedigree and must be commercially attractive.” Fred van Straaten adds: “We look at the mother. What has he done in sports? We have a rule that the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother must have performed themselves in the sport or have offspring that perform remarkably in the sport. That is an indication of a horse's disposition and character. We are looking for horses that go for it, fight for you. The moment a foal enters the orbit and it is enterprising, it moves electrically and when you see that it does not stick to the mother but goes its own way, then you know; we must have it.” Bert: “We make no concessions in terms of quality. Both the mare and the foal must have super quality.”

The first selection day will be held on Saturday 5 May, during which foals will be selected at the Waaij Stud in Eemnes, Stal Wezenberg in IJsselmuiden and Team Nijhof in Geesteren. In addition, the committee also visits breeders' homes. The first foals for the auctions on September 11 and 12 have already been confirmed. More news about this soon.  On this page you can register your foal(s) online, and find all selection dates and further information.

Successful international GP debut for Boston STH

In the short time that Denise Nekeman and the Boston STH (by Johnson), sold through Foal Auction Prinsjesdag, performed at Grand Prix level, they have already achieved high-profile successes. That started with a beautiful bronze medal at the KNHS Indoor Championships, followed by the victory and a personal best of more than 73% at the competition in Wezep. The international Grand Prix debut also resulted in a great success. At the three-star competition in Aachen, Denise drove her black wonder of movement, bred by Jan Temmink from Vorden, to fourth place in the Grand Prix thanks to a score of over 69%. This made them the best Dutch duo, and the next day in the freestyle they went even further. A good score of over 74% put them in third place. That tastes like more!

Fantastic bronze for Boston STH at NK!

At their first Dutch Championship for Seniors, Denise Nekeman delivered a fantastic performance with the Johnson son Boston STH, one of the successful references of Foal Auction Prinsjesdag. In both the Grand Prix and the Freestyle they finished third with nice percentages.

The NK was only the fifth Grand Prix competition for Denise Nekeman and the Boston STH bred by Jan Temmink and it immediately resulted in a medal. In 2015, they already triumphed at the Dutch Championship with the Young Riders, after which they successfully focused on the U25 classes. And now for the Seniors, straight away bronze for the 24-year-old rider and her 12-year-old stallion Boston STH (Johnson out of Volmie ster by Quattro B).

Strong debut
Thanks to a score of 71.92% in the Grand Prix and 72.75% in the Freestyle, the duo achieved an average percentage of 72.34%, which puts them behind Diederik van Silfhout with Expression (by Vivaldi) and Adelinde Cornelissen with Zephyr (by Jazz). ) were able to take their place on the podium. Congratulations!

“Every time I see Pablo I get a smile on my face!”

Amazon: Ava MacCoubrey

1. What makes Pablo so special to you?

“Pablo is a very special horse. It was love at first sight when we met and we bonded right away. Every time I see Pablo, I get a smile on my face. He is such a good horse and he is so sweet to all the people around him.”

2. How is Pablo to drive?

“He is certainly not the easiest horse to ride. Although he is a real learning horse and does everything correctly, he is a challenge and that is what I love about him. Lori Bell, his owner was his previous rider. She rode Grand Prix with him.”

3. How is Pablo in the stable?
“Pablo is very social in the stable. He always stands with his head out of the stall and always has his ears forward when you walk by. He loves to eat and will do anything for a treat! When it's feeding time, he neighs to make sure you don't forget to feed him."

4. What's the best thing you've experienced with Pablo so far?

“Pablo guided me through my first international competitions and my first year riding in the juniors. This year we went to the North American Dressage Junior Championships. We finished in the top ten all three days and I was the best Canadian rider in the ranking with him. I think that was our best performance. Pablo has recently retired. He is back with his owner and during the day he enjoys a very large meadow. He also loves to ride outside.”

5. Have you ever visited a foal auction? Would you buy a foal at an auction or would you prefer to buy a three or four year old?
“I've never attended an auction, but it's definitely something I want to do in the future. I think I would prefer to buy a three or four year old.”

“Pablo made my dream of racing GP come true!”

Owner: Lori Bell

1. Why did Pablo speak to you when you bought him?
“I bought Pablo twelve years ago as an eight-year-old through Egbert Kraak. I import and sell horses, but bought Pablo as a training horse for myself. He appealed to me because he was good, nice to ride and he was already trained to almost Prix St. George level.

2. Did Pablo live up to your expectations?
“Pablo made my dreams come true. He was my first horse that I rode Grand Prix dressage with, a wish I had for a long time. I drove it myself for ten years; of which three years in the Grand Prix. For the last two years, Ava MacCoubrey has competed him internationally among the juniors. Pablo was not spectacular in his movements, but has a heart of gold. He always does his best for you and that's why he reached the Grand Prix. Together we climbed the road to the Grand Prix. Pablo has always been a patient and cooperative teacher for me. In competitions he was very reliable and in the ring he always gave his best. We have only raced the Grand Prix at the national level in Canada. We always scored very consistently around 60% (scores between 58 and 62%) in over thirty tests. Very nice scores for us together. I was eager to learn and he patiently tried his best every time. He really has a fantastic character”.

3. Do you have a special bond with Pablo?
“Pablo is very special to me for several reasons. Obviously because we spent a lot of time together over the past twelve years, but also the way he came into my life. My father unfortunately died in a car accident and with his inheritance I was able to buy this fantastic horse. That is why Pablo has always had a very special place in my heart.”

4. How is Pablo in the stable?
“He is a sweet horse, who is a little bit of a spoiled little prince. He has a nice character; cheerful, but he does want attention as if he knows he is very special.”

5. What is the most beautiful thing you have experienced with Pablo?
“The best thing about my driving career with Pablo was that we reached the Grand Prix together and drove at this level for three years. Thanks to him I have learned so much in dressage that I have now trained my fourth horse to Grand Prix level. Pablo gave me the skill to now successfully ride at an international level with different horses. A few months ago, Pablo returned home after two years with Ava in the juniors. Ava learned a lot from him and Pablo finished his career with a 7e place (out of 35) in the North American Dressage Junior Championships. He is now retired and enjoys spending whole days in the meadow with his new mate, a quarter horse.”

“Pablo was a beautiful foal and could move well. All of his mother Kadivette's foals were special.”

Breeder: Jan and Greetje Nijhuis

What was Pablo like as a foal?

“Pablo was a beautiful foal and could move well. All of his mother Kadivette's foals were special and about nine of her children have been sold at auctions.”

How is his mother Kadivette?

“We still have his mother Kadivette (Voltaire x Ursus). She is now 25 years old, but she looks much younger. She walks in the meadow with a horse of our neighbor. She is a sensitive mare, very sweet to handle, but she was not so easy under saddle. She has competed in M-dressage. She has the elite predicate and has produced many good foals. Several children compete at Z-dressage or higher and she is the dam of Onkadivette (Come On x Voltaire) who has competed at Z1 dressage, of which daughter Victoria ter Kwincke (Emilion x Come On) jumped 1.40m and another Emlion daughter jumps 1.35m . Furthermore, son Goldwin (Montender x Voltaire) is not without merit in the eventing sport of Great Britain.”

Do you still follow Pablo?

“We used to breed very actively; always went to Holstein to inseminate mares and brought many foals to auctions. At the moment we are no longer very active in equestrian sports. It's nice that Pablo is doing so well with his Canadian rider! I still take care of his mother Kadivette every day. We also have a gelding in the sport, but we no longer breed.”

Why did you choose the Prinsjesdag Auction and do you advise other breeders to sell foals through the auction?

“We gave up Pablo ourselves at the time and he was selected, which was nice. We have had many foals at auctions. Nine children by Kadivette have been sold at auctions alone, of which Onkadivette (by Come On), Raphael (by Espri), Traumblume-Divette (by Escudo I), Unique BH (by Escudo I), Zandro (by . Sandro Song) and Esprit Z (by El Bundy I) were also sold at the Prinsjesdag auction. We are therefore enthusiastic about the Prinsjesdag auction and would recommend it to other breeders as well.”

How did you experience the auction at the time?

“The Prinsjesdag auction was still in Middenbeemster at the time. It was always fun at the auction. Because it was already twenty years ago and we sold many foals through the auction, I can't remember much about it. It was still in the Golden Age.”

Prince's Day foal Kaiser Milton champion Trakehner Verband

Kaiser Milton has been crowned champion of the Trakehner stallion selection. Owner Jan Pieter Dalsem from Den Hoorn bought the stallion as a foal at the 2015 Prinsjesdag auction. AJW Aan de Stegge from Enter bred the Millennium stallion out of the full sister of the Grand Prix stallions Kaiserkult TSF and Kaiserdom. Breeding manager Lars Gehrmann of the Trakehner Verband called Kaiser Milton a stallion who combines everything: a beautiful model, good movements and a good hind leg and a great pedigree.

In 2015, Kaiser Milton brought €15,000 into our auction, which turned out to be a good investment. The appealing stallion was sold for €320,000 to Stal Klosterhof Medingen in Bad Bevensen, Germany.

Nekeman and Boston STH winning Grand Prix debut

Denise Nekeman and her Boston STH (Johnson x Volmie), auctioned during the Foal Auction Prinsjesdag in 2006, made their official debut in Grand Prix dressage last weekend.

At the Suptop competition in Genemuiden, the duo finished the race with a score of 69.45%, which gave the duo their first Grand Prix victory.

”The lines are quite different than in the U25 and the level is more difficult, but in general the test went well”, the proud Nekeman told Horses.nl. “The plan is to continue driving the Grand Prix during the winter season. In the U25 I knew exactly where I stood, that's all new now. So for the time being I will continue to ride the Grand Prix and after six months I will decide whether I will ride the U25 again or not," said Nekeman.
